Sorry guys for not posting new article for a while since the last one, I was so busy lately at work. However, i was able to take sometime of work lastweek to join Herman and a team of researchers from Natural History Museum of London to do some fishing in Tanjung Malim.
The main purpose of this trip is helping them collecting specimens, it should not be an issue for us to help as we know the fishing spots very well but we was in rude shock when we seeing this.
They completely restructure the stream the way they wanted to prevent flood hence all our natural fishing spots are completely gone! But the forest behind it is still save, at least for now…
Dr Sebastian, the researcher is dipping the fishes into ethanol, the fishes died almost instantly and later will be preserved in a bottle labeled with the GPS coordinate.
15 is the magic number, they tried to catch 15 specimens each species if possible. Those fishes didn’t die in vein, its for the sake of science and the future of its own kind that they died for.
Dr Lucas, the other researcher is taking picture of the habitat with his Nikon D300.
I manage to take some photos of the fish we caught but not most of them, we caught all the three betta’s species in this area which is Betta Hipposideros, Betta Bellica and Betta Livida and the one of the most important one, Parosphromenus Harveyi.
Betta Livida.
Betta Hipposideros.
Mastacembelus circumcinctus.
Balitorid loach?

So how many species and total specimens did the BMNH people catch and collect from the Tg. Malim site? If any people are allowed to catch and collect fauna specimens from the rich biodiversity resources in our country, are they not required to get a permit from the Wildlife Dept.? or other Govt. agencies? Are they also not required to deposit a report or list of the BioD resources they collected and take out of the country. Just curious. It’s quite easy to get BioD resources here.
Thanks for any reply,
Mike

Yes, they need to hire an agent to do the works. There had went thru a proper procedure and paper work with FRIM, so the shipping of specimens out of the country and tour arrangement was all done by them.

Thanks for the reply. I hope there is an inventory at FRIM at least we may know what they have and BMNH will have an inventory of specimens from Malaysia. Museums are not the best institutions in the world to let public know what they have. I may be wrong. By saying Tg Malim I think you mean that the area is quite close to the Sg. Dusun FR where Wildlife Dept. has the Tapir Conservation Centre? No need to say exactly where but I have a general idea. Thanks.
