Many of the traditional fishermen as of now, the fish caught, using ordinary methods of fishing and handling will be liable to forfeiture. Over the years, in rural area like this fisherman making a living by catching Betta fish to the supply chain in Kalimantan barat got very little help and support from the authority, and they often being bullied by the local supplier who claimed the high mortality rate from the fish they received on them.
Fish caught from the wild will be packed in high density and the packages is aligned on the ground awaits collection. In many cases, supplier will purposely delay the collection date, by doing so the stock will start dying and many of the fish will get sick, as a result the fisherman will forced to sell off the remaining in dirt low prices or risk having the entire fishes die.
Every day, the fisherman will poured out the fish from the bag, threw away the dead fish and before repacking, the water will be changed. Basic source of the water is form the river which is prompt to disease. Fishes are cool blooded and handling them with our hands cause temperature shock and traumatizing them.
Dead fishes as a result of mishandling.
Basic knowledge on handling fish needed to be taught to them for the sack of fish as well as helping them improve their living. Daron Tan, who is my mentor in fish keeping, has a society project to offer targeting to help the native setting up quarantine centre and training, any other party who willing to lends their hands on this project are very much appreciated, do contact me.
